ShopSavvy now includes retailers in 466 malls!

When we launched ShopSavvy along with T-Mobile and Google last month our local UPC data was confined to major big box retailers.  Our business development team has been hard at work adding mall-based retailers to provide high quality local price comparison.  We are pleased to announce that ShopSavvy now includes UPCs in more than 130 cities in more than 466 shopping malls.  ShopSavvy now has local UPC pricing data within 30 miles of 70% of US consumers.  Malls included in ShopSavvy:

Are you hungry? ShopSavvy now has food!

The team here has been busy getting ready for the official launch of ShopSavvy along with the T-Mobile’s G1 mobile phone.  Much of our work has been on the business development side of the house working with retailers here in the US and in Europe.  Our early testing revealed that we had a few blind spots in our pricing data. First, we didn’t have ANY food items in our database.  Ironically, when we would hand the G1 to anyone the first thing they would scan was bottled water.  Bottled water?  Who cares about the price of bottled water?  No one, but it was the handiest product that had a UPC symbol. We decided to get as many food related items into the system prior to launch.

I am pleased to announce that w recently we added approximately 800,000 food-related UPCs to our system (if you have a demo G1 you will be able to scan food and receive descriptions, but pricing won’t be available until the 22nd).  Not only did we add almost a million grocery items, but we have added 30 brick and mortar grocery chains in every major US city to our system.  This means we will be able to provide compelling local pricing data to users.  Stay tuned for more grocery related news.

iPhone Campaign Application

Landing Page of Obama '08 appCongrats to our friend Raven Zachary for leading the team that built the ‘Obama ‘08 for iPhone‘ application.  Despite the fact that I am supporting McCain, I wanted to give kudos to Raven and his team.  They did a great job.  It has been my feeling that ’stats’ are the killer application.  Everyone wants to compare themselves to everyone else.  It starts in kindergarten when we get our first grades.  The best feature of the application is the ability to see nationwide call stats (i.e. so see how your call activity compares to other volunteers).  Other features include:

  • Call Friends: A great volunteering tool that lets you make a difference any time you want by talking to people you already know. Your contacts are prioritized by key battleground states, and you can make calls and organize results all in one place.
  • Get Involved: Do more. Find and contact your local Obama for America HQ.
  • Receive Updates: Receive the latest news and announcements via text messages or email.
  • News: Browse complete coverage of national and local campaign news.
  • Local Events: Find local events, share by email and get maps and directions.
  • Media: Browse videos and photos from the campaign
  • Issues: Get clear facts about Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s plan for essential issues facing Americans.

ShopSavvy Videos in the Wild

On a lark I searched for ShopSavvy on YouTube and found a number of fun videos of the application, here are a few:

Barcode IP Landscape

ShopSavvy has been getting great press coverage since our launch with T-Mobile and Google last week.  However, someone going by the name of StreetStylz has been posting negative and threatening comments everywhere.  The comments go something like this, “I wonder if the creators of ShopSavvy know that they are in violation of NeoMedia’s patents?”  I thought it might make sense to respond to the issue, i.e. whether or not ShopSavvy violates patents issued to NeoMedia:

First, the US Patent Office has rejected ALL 95 NeoMedia patent claims according to an article by Joel Hruska, “Bar code patent invalidated, another notch on EFF’s belt.“  Bascially, the patent office reviewed ex parte briefs filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and found “a significant amount of prior art, arguing NeoMedia’s patent claims were not novel”.  The patent office will review the patent in October, until then all litigation against ScanBuy has been put on hold.

Second, I have reviewed the NeoMedia patent in question and it seems fairly clear that it is focused on the 2D CueCat-style business model (perhaps why they were able to confuse the Patent Office the first time).  Had the examiner fromt he Patent Office realized that NeoMedia would assert a claim on barcode scanners in general I suspect the patent would have never been issued.  I suspect this is why NeoMedia hasn’t contacted our company.

Finally, StreetStyle’s comments are not isolated, but EVERYWHERE.  Mr. StreetStylz is making a concerted effort to defame our application.  I did a little digging and learned that Mr. StreetStylz is a 27 year old male from the East Coast (likely from New Jersey) who works for NeoMedia.  We have a list of the IP addresses he has used to make the comments and our next objective is to determine if he posted them from his work computer at NeoMedia (i.e. acting as a NeoMedia representative).  If NeoMedia has an issue with our application it is my view that they should contact us directly and not mount a public relations campaign against ShopSavvy in blog comments.

Windows Mobile Delayed… until 2010?

Matt over at VentureBeat is suggesting that Microsoft is delaying Windows Mobile until 2010.  Steve, have you heard about Android?  What about a suite of Microsoft applications for the open platform instead of spending time on your own operating system for mobile phones that no one can afford?

T-Mobile G1 Sold Out! WTF?

T-Mobile G1 by you.T-Mobile’s first Android based phone, the G1, has sold out almost a month before you can actually get your hands on one.  This according to TmoNews, the Unofficial T-Mobile Blog.  People are desperate to get their hands on this device.  The handset is great, but the real story is Android, the open platform that makes the G1 go.  If you want an early look at the G1 and you happen to live in Dallas you can check it out at the Startup Happy Hour on Monday (RSVP here).  We will have at least two live G1 units where we can demo our application.

If you are interested in becoming part of the Android developer community in Dallas we invite you to join us at AndroidDevCamp on October 25th (RSVP here).  In the spirit of iPhoneDevCamp, AndroidDevCamp seeks to capitalize on the release of the first mobile phone running Google’s open source operating system, Android. The power of Android isn’t grounded in a particular carrier or handset maker, instead the power of Android comes from you - the developer. The promise of Android is great, with backers including Google, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, Samsung, LG, T-Mobile, Nvidia and Wind River System (all members of the Open Handset Alliance). Come be a part of the future of mobile phones and build applications based on a set of open standards for ALL mobile devices. Dallas is home to not just one Android Challenge Winner, but TWO! Rylan Barnes, the original developer of GoCart (now ShopSavvy) will be demonstrating his application and sharing his year long odessy of development on the Android platform. Jason Hudgins, part of the team that developed TuneWiki, will also be demonstrating his application and sharing his experiences with Android as well.

Apple to cut iPhone production by 4 million

According to ZDNet, Apple is reducing production of the iPhone by 4 million units for the remainder of the year.  Is this because of the launch of the G1 Android based phone, the state of the economy or perhaps just a miscalculation by Apple?  You decide.
